Our Process

Let's take you through the process

Ordering a custom built Defender from Brooklyn Coachworks is a simple process.

Step 1

Process Name

In designing our Defenders, we adhere to the philosophy of "less is more". From the beginning, these simple, robust, charming utility vehicles were never overbuilt, so our design process reflects that. The Defender is kept as close to its original design as possible while being modernized to meet modern needs. With our expertise, we can build the perfect Defender.

Step 2

Process Name

A Defender will not perform better with a 3-inch lift and 37-inch tires. It will be difficult to drive, unreliable, and overstress the driveline. Since we've been testing and building Defenders for 20 years, we've developed the perfect formula for both on-road and off-road use. Our formula is to never overbuild the car but to improve it with the right blend of modifications.

Overview paragraph

Step 1

The Build Sheet

Brooklyn Coachworks will provide you with a Build Sheet that details all options, accessories, paint colors, and trim details. We can edit this Build Sheet until you are satisfied with what is included with your restored Defender. Once we receive sign-off, we begin the restoration process.

STEP 2

Restoring your Defender

Brooklyn Coachworks will restore your Defender according to the Build Sheet specifications. The donor car is stripped down to its bare chassis. A galvanized chassis has been fitted with all new suspension components. The new bulkhead, doors, and body panels are installed after they have been painted. Our Italian leather interiors and all trim are installed during the third month of production.

STEP 3

Registering your Defender

Brooklyn Coachworks will register your Defender for you. Obtaining the license plates and title for your Defender requires collecting local state taxes. You will need insurance (Hagerty, State Farm, Progressive, etc.) for your newly restored Defender. Each state processes paperwork differently, so timing can vary.

STEP 4

Shipping your Defender

Brooklyn Coachworks will deliver your custom-built defender to your door. We use a variety of shippers, so you can choose an uncovered shipment that's cheaper or a covered shipment that's more expensive. All shipments are insured. There is a wide variation in rates across the country. A shipment to the West Coast can cost between $1,500 and $2,000.Rates in Florida can range from $1,000 - $1,500. All rate depend on the season and availability.

Payment Options and build times

Paid in full

Brooklyn Coachworks offers a 5% discount if the Land Rover Defender is paid in full upfront. With this 5% off, you can save anywhere from $7,500 to $10,000 on your purchase. Having a lower final bill of sale also means paying less in local state taxes at the time of registration.

In addition, your Defender will be expedited and finished in 4 months.

75% down payment

Brooklyn Coachworks will require a 75% deposit in order to fully restore your Defender to your specifications. Upon completion, the remaining 25% will be collected. The Defender will be registered to you and shipped to you after your state issues plates.

Your Defender will be finished in 4 to 6 months as a result.

Four easy payment

You will need to make four easy payments over the course of eight months for Brooklyn Coachworks to fully restore your Defender. When the last payment is received, the Defender will be finished, registered and shipped to you.

Additionally, your Defender will be completed in 6 to 8 months.

To say I am a fan of Brooklyn Coachworks is an understatement. They are creating and reimagining, hands down, the best-looking Defenders on the market today. There is an attention to detail, craft, and most importantly, authenticity to the badge. Daniel’s obsession is obvious with the quality of his builds and his hands-on approach—most of all his deep passion for driving these Land Rovers. I highly recommend Brooklyn Coachworks if you are in the market for a Land Rover Defender.

Matt Hranek - WM Brown Magazine

There is no denying that Land Rover Defenders have slipped into the torrents of trendiness, and there is a real danger of builders diluting the essence that made them appealing in the first place. However, after 20 years of building the same Defender 90 repeatedly, Daniel Marcello, President of Brooklyn Coachworks, has learned a few things about the old Bulldogs. He manages to maintain a specific aesthetic and supreme build quality that can only come from decades spent building Defenders.

Peter Corn - Iron & Air Magazine Issue 048

Daniel Marcello has mastered the blending of style, taste, and purpose. Brooklyn Coachworks isn’t trying to make its restorations into something that they are not. His craft stays true to the heritage of the brand and he builds his trucks to be used as originally intended, albeit in a little more comfort. It’s a rare find in the automotive space, especially the Land Rover niche, that operates with such class.
