Brooklyn Coachworks Design & Build Philosophy

Our purpose built Land Rover Defenders remain true to their original design while being modified to meet everyday driving needs.

Our Design Philosophy

In designing our Defenders, we adhere to the philosophy of "less is more". From the beginning, these simple, robust, charming utility vehicles were never overbuilt, so our design process reflects that. The Defender is kept as close to its original design as possible while being modernized to meet modern needs. With our expertise, we can build the perfect Defender.

Our Build Philosophy

A Defender will not perform better with a 3-inch lift and 37-inch tires. It will be difficult to drive, unreliable, and overstress the driveline. Since we've been testing and building Defenders for 20 years, we've developed the perfect formula for both on-road and off-road use. Our formula is to never overbuild the car but to improve it with the right blend of modifications.

a Strong foundation

It is important to start with a strong foundation. We start with a hot-dip galvanized chassis that is e-coated in black paint. This method provides your Defender's chassis with the highest level of corrosion protection.

Hardware of the highest grade is paired with our galvanized chassis. On the underside of our Defenders, galvanized, zinc-coated and A4-80 Hardware is used to ensure the best possible corrosion resistance, and material strength.

All new weather seals, window glass and exterior trim pieces are fitted to ensure a tight fit against the outside elements. New HVAC system with heat and air conditioning is fitted to ensure comfort while driving.

Genuine Land Rover Puma TD4 doors are exclusively used on all our restored Defenders, which increase structural rigidity, corrosion resistance, and interior sealing significantly. These doors can be fitted with manual or electric windows.

The Land Rover 300Tdi (122 HP/210 lb⋅ft) engine is a robust four-cylinder 2.5l Turbo Diesel with direct injection. The motor is almost entirely mechanically driven and spare parts are easy to obtain. You will see a cruise speed of 70mph.

Cummins introduced its new R2.8 (161 HP/310 lb⋅ft) EPA-certified Turbo Diesel engine in 2017. Power and torque is delivered throughout the entire RPM range, with an effortless cruising speed of 75-90mph.

Ford 2.3l EcoBoost is a small 4 cylinder gasoline motor (310 HP/350 lb⋅ft) that is quiet, efficient and quick. This turbo charged motor transforms the Defender without being too expensive. You will see a cruise speed of 75-90mph.

General Motors 6.2/ V8 LS3 (420 HP/420 lb⋅ft) motor is a gasoline powered engine you will find in most GM SUVs. This engine will quickly get you up to speed and have a modern drive to it as well.

Depending on your engine choice, we can pair either a manual or automatic transmission of your choice. The engine will also determine the transfercase gearing as well so that your car will drive smooth and efficiently.

All new Land Rover progressive springs and nitrogen shocks are fitted for a smooth and precise ride. New genuine bushings, radius arm, and training arms are paired with upgraded A4-80 hardware.

Disc brakes on all 4 wheels are fitted, with vented front disc brakes upfront. Zinc coated brake calipers are fitted with stainless steel brake lines ensure the highest quality and longest lasting braking system.

We galvanize wheel hubs, flanges, and steering components to prevent rust and corrosion. The driveline is constructed with hot-dip galvanized, zinc coated, and A4-80 hardware of the highest quality.

Creature Comforts

Brooklyn Coachworks takes design very seriously. We follow the "less is more" philosophy when designing our interiors. We like to use simple patterns and shapes, and never want to overfill the space with overweight materials and aftermarket trim pieces that never fit correctly.

Our genuine Italian leather is from a tannery in Vicenza, and is considered the highest quality upholstery coming from the region. We follow the simple lines and shapes of the original seats with either straight (horizontal), quilted (squares), and fluted (vertical) patterns.

Soundproofing is laid down under the carpets to help reduce noise and vibration. We also fit sound deadening material under the Alcantara headliner and rear window trim pieces to regulate temperature and reduce noise inside the cabin, while improving internal sound quality and acoustics.

We fit genuine gauges or VDO gauges for easy readability. Pioneer's DMH-WT8600NEX and Sony's XAV-9500ES touchscreen CarPlay / Android Auto compatible stereo systems are used to help modernize and keep you connected with GPS maps, music and intergraded back-up camera.

A center cubby box features two cup holders and is large enough to let you store a 15" laptop inside along with other items. More storage can be found in the classic Defender dashboard that runs across the front. Power charging through four USB ports, and a 12 volt plug come standard.

Other amenities include electric windows, electric locks and heated seats. If more storage is needed we can fit a slide out drawer to the rear of the Defender. Fold up side steps can be fitted to each door entrance. Refrigerators, gull-wing windows and auxiliary heaters can also be installed.

Heat and air conditioning comes standard on our Defenders unless otherwise specified. Manual sliding and tilting front seats means you will never be stuck in a single position. Custom cut pile carpets with sound proofing help reduce noise and cozy up the interior.

We fit genuine Italian leather steering wheels as the touch and feel is not only incredible, but they feel comfortable to grip for driving long distances. Automatic or manual locks so you can be mindful and open your partners door first. Automatic transmissions can be fitted to all our engine choices as well.

We feel passionate about our interiors as this is where you will spend most of your time. Short trip around town or a month long overland trip; the space that you spend the most time in should be comfortable, calming and well laid-out. We can help custom design your interior to your needs.

Quality Control

The Defender always had an incredible suspension set up from the factory. We feel the latest progressive Puma Td4 springs paired with genuine nitrogen shocks are best suited for handling the car. We can fit a lift, but field testing has proved our standard suspension will suit 99% of your driving needs.

We can also fit an updated airbag suspension kit that can self-level, and has three height modes; standard, +3 inches higher and -1 inch lower. We also fit heavy-duty suspension springs if you plan to run a winch with winch bumper, roof-rack, loadspace drawer or any other heavy equipment.

All new front radius arms and rear trailing arms are used with genuine Land Rover bushings which last the longest and have the perfect amount of ride comfort. We also galvanized the rear shock towers, front turrets, and spring seats to prevent corrosion on your suspension.

Almost all of our Defenders share the same look. The BF Goodrich KM3 mud-terrain tire with the famous steel wheel. Why this combination? After testing countless tire sizes, styles, and wheels, we feel this Wolf ANR4583 steel wheel with 255/85R16 KM3 tires is the perfect combination.

Our 33-inch tire provides the most clearance and does not require any modifications to the driveline. Larger tires (35", 37") add weight, overstress the driveline, consume fuel, and do not match the car's appearance. It is likely that future problems will occur if the suspension is not built correctly.

If you would like 315/75R16 (35") tires please consult with us first. We can build you the correct suspension for that size. We also provide a period correct Michelin XZL 7.50R16 on ANR4636 Road Wheels. 16" and 18" alloy wheels can also be fitted. We can also run a different size and tread style tire if needed.

We use genuine Land Rover steering wheels as they eliminate any vibration fatigue, and our genuine Italian leather & Alcantara feels incredible to grip.
Since our headliners are made of fiberglass, they will never sag or absorb moisture. We offer nine different colors that are all available in Alcantara.

All new 5mm glass is used to absorb sound. New rubber door seals and new rear sliding windows are supplied on all our builds.

Automatic or manual locks so you can be mindful and open your partners door first. Automatic transmissions can be fitted to all our engine choices as well.
